2016 BLACK SANDS TOURNAMENT AND CAMPOUT

(8/20/16) The campground was fairly full by Friday morning and that didn’t include those that camped across the way, those up above where they could hook up, and those that camped down toward the dam.  The installation of the pits on Friday went well under the direction of Zach Dillon with his team Jessica Montgomery, Phil Edwards and rest of the crew.  A lot of extra people helped.  I don’t have a list of all the helpers, but want them to know how much that is appreciated.  The weather was really hot, but all those dedicated players hung in there by drinking a lot of water and a whole lot more beer!!!  We had 82 players in the tournament plus a lot of non-playing guests (I would guess about 125+ people were there).  The tournament girls (Alene Haugse, Melody Maynard, and Lyndsy Zapp) kept things rolling along so smoothly that we were done just before dark.  There was no live music or korokke, but that didn’t stop anybody that wanted to dance up a storm. The food crew put on a fabulous feed as usual (brisket, pork, baked potatoes, corn on the cob, and Cole Slaw).  A big hug to Bert and Misty Johnson, Willie and Terri Baldry, and Wayne and Daphne Amend.

A few people stayed for the Sunday after-tournament (20 players).  I think it was even hotter on Sunday, so they were glad it didn’t last too long.  After that small tournament, our fellow jokester (Brent Clark) put on a little Special Olympics event that included two new events (the six pack toss and dropping the golf ball in the cup).  There was a good amount of laughter during that and we then had a little buffet.  So thankful for those that hung out until Monday morning and helped tear down the pits and get everything loaded back up.

LDG ANNUAL JULY TOURNAMENT

(7/30/16) It was probably the hottest I can remember for a tournament.  There were 40 dedicated (or crazy) people that played in the sweltering heat.  Lots of water and especially beer was consumed and everybody was glad the Bairds brought a mister the Maynards brought a water fan, and there were two pop-up shades.   People were able to at least cool down a little.  There were great gifts raffled off, including a "Keystone Light" cooler and a small Coors refrigerator.  Off course the Keystone Kids managed to buy the cooler from  the winner.  The food was fabulous as always - The bar cooked up a bunch of pulled pork and others brought great salads and snacks.  Thanks to the Hymas's (LDG) for another great year.

2nd Place - Melody Maynard & Spence Tracey ($54)

(6/25/16) It was a beautiful summer day.  The Baird crew showed up early to spruce up the pits.  Not a huge turnout (26 players), but fun was certainly had by all.  McCleary's cooked up burgers and dogs, and players brought great side dishes and snacks.  McCleary's gave some of the winners a little extra with Hoodies, T-Shirts, or Tanks Tops.  Oh and McCleary's had a special on "bomb" drinks and there were many of those drank that day.  It was a GREAT DAY with GREAT PEOPLE!!!

TURNER'S 4TH ANNUAL TOURNAMENT

(5/14/16) The weather was great – expected rain, but it held off until Sunday.  Had a smaller group with just 20 players, so we did the high-low draw and there were some fabulous games tossed.  Turner’s cooked a bunch of dogs and there were some great tasting sides, including Mark’s potato salad, Terri’s spinach with berries salad, and Julie’s delicious baked beans.  Fun was had by all, but I didn’t take many pictures this time.  We did take a group picture, but had trouble getting everybody, so we missed Ali and one other.  Actually there were not many pictures because the one in charge was having TOO MUCH FUN!!!  LOL.  If anyone has some good pictures, send to Dave Hamman.  Thanks to JC for coordinating things inside and to Mark Leoni for working on the pits before everybody got there.  Also thanks to the Keystone Kids and clan for bringing the most people.

1st Place – Terri Baldry and Debbie Duncan ($40)
2nd Place – Willie Baldry and Jade Bacus ($30)
3rd Place – Gene Leiby and Tom Sipiora ($20)

SPRING FLING  KICKOFF TOURNAMENT

(4/16/16) What a wonderful warm and sunny day and a fabulous turnout for the kickoff.  We had 70 players not including Jade and Scotty, plus a few stragglers that came after the event started.  Thanks so very much to the helpers.  Melody Maynard and Arlene Haugse handled the tournament draw and setting up the board and Arlene pretty much ran the tournament all day.  Arlene was a bit tired by the end, but she had to stick around anyway because Steve was in it to the end.  It was so nice for me (Jade) to just enjoy the crowd and drink a few beers without having to worry about the board.  With that many players and even with 3 pits, it took a little longer than usual.  We didn’t get done until almost 11:00 pm, but everybody were troopers as usual and we appreciate the outside bartender and good food.  We also had an important birthday to celebrate.  Paula Prescott turned 50 and her good friend Kerri came all the way from Seattle and provided a beautiful cake for all to enjoy.

There was a bit of a wait for the players on the hill (Steve Haugse and Dale Price), so they were not as warmed up by the time Debbie Duncan and Tom Thweat came around from the losers side.  Debbie and Tom won the first match, but Steve and Dale picked it up to take the last match for 1st Place.

McCleary's ST. PATTY'S DAY TOURNAMENT

(3/19/16) Even though there was the annual St. Patty’s Day tournament at the LDG on March 12th, there was a very respectable showing for the St. Patty’s Day tournament at McCleary’s the following weekend on the 19th.  The weather definitely cooperated and there were 26 great people there to enjoy the nice day as well as the Corned Beef and Cabbage cooked up by McCleary’s and crew.  There was a keg outside to serve those that like PBR and Coors, plus plenty of shots and other drinks served up to our pleasure by the friendly staff.  They had a fabulous presentation put on by the Boise Firefighters Bagpipers group.  With several bagpipers, plus drummers, it was well worth stopping the tournament to enjoy the entertainment.  They played very good and were rewarded for their talents with a lot of dollars placed in their garters/socks.  After the tournament, there was also a band later that played some great music to dance and listen to.  It was definitely a fun-filled event.  Thanks Much to McCleary’s (Anna, Ali, and their staff).

LDG ST. PATTY'S DAY TOURNAMENT

(3/12/16) We started out the day with a wonderful group of 52 players.  What a turn-out!!! (especially since it was supposed to rain).  Scott and Jill Hymas put on quite a feed with huge pots of Corned Beef and Cabbage and Leonard Johnson added another huge pot of his famous Chicken and Dumplings. Coors showed up with alot of door prizes, and Dave Hamman won the grand prize Coors Fridge. It was a pleasant day, although it did rain for a while late in the day and things did get pretty wet.  However, it did stop raining at the end and turned off fairly warm.  Good thing since the finals were still going around 10 pm.  Second place team did come from the losers side and beat the undefeated team the first game, but Steve and David brought it together for the second game to take it all.   That did make for a pretty long day, but everybody hung on and were great sports regardless.  There were still a lot of people left to enjoy the awards and the traditional round of drinks offered up by the LDG owners.  We love you guys and appreciate all the support of the players.

1st Place – Steve Burley and David Baird ($96)
2nd Place – Tom Thweat and Jade Bacus ($72)
3rd Place – DJ and Justin Baird ($48)
4th Place – Dave Maynard and Chris Law ($24)
5th/6th Place – Lyle Gabhart and Spence Tracey ($10)
5th/6th Place – Sherrie Hix and Blake Parker ($10)

FEBRUARY FREEZE OUT TOURNAMENT

(2/27/16) This was the first event at this very old well-known bar, the Vista Bar, but new to one of our horseshoes sponsors.  There were 28 players and the weather cooperated beautifully.  All had a bunch of fun, especially with the $3.50 1800 tequila shots and $3.00 vodka shots.  Even though the pits are a little close to each other, there was plenty of room for people to spectate, keep score, and mill around as usual.  We welcome this new sponsor and look forward to their participation in the league this season.

1st Place – Carlos Marquez and Tom Sipiora ($56)
2nd Place – David Baird and Jade Bacus ($42)
3rd Place – Jim Vogelpohl and Zach Dillon ($28)
4th Place – Tom Deide and Mark Warren ($14)

JD BATSON MEMORIAL NEW YEARS TOURNAMENT

(1/1/2016)  28 souls braved the blistery day.  Fortunately it did not snow and the wind did not blow.  There was some nice sun part of the day, but certainly cold to the bone.  Everybody was wonderful and did not complain a bit.  Tom Sipiora and Chris Hoots were on the winners hill, but there was a long wait for the winners of the losers bracket to come around to play the finals.  Willie Baldry and Lyle Gabhart had kept their momentum going and worked hard to beat Tom and Chris twice to win the tournament.  Scott and Jill Hymas put on some great dogs and chili and others brought fabulous sides.  The sweet waitresses kept the brews coming, and that kept everybody warm with the help of a small fire in the barrel.  Scott Hymas got a little tired (LOL), so Jill Hymas took over to announce the awards and offer up their normal generous round of drinks for all.  Thank You to the bar and all the great friends that made the day a fun one. Willie Baldry was also the lucky drawing winner of the great smoker/cooker donated by Budweiser
